I’m not one to typically make or stick to New Year’s resolutions, but “this year is going to be different.” Even nailing 3-4 of these (for a time) is progress. Here’s my list:
- Grow a beard.
- Read more works by Wendell Berry
- Complain less.
- Compliment more.
- Watch 75% less movies/TV than I watched in 2010. (Only 2-3 programs were really worth the time invested in them.)
- Slow down through simplification.
- Nurture the appreciation for words like ‘vociferous’, ‘picayune’, and ‘atavistic’. (Go on, look them up if you want. They’re really great.)
- Write for at least an hour every day (procrastinating sleep if needed.)
- Practice the discipline of living in the present tense.
- Become a treasure hunter–seeking out the gold that lies buried, and conspicuously on the surface, of all the people in my life.
- Embrace mystery while foregoing quick judgments.

Great list! I am excited about the beard. Should take what,
about three days? And my favorite of the three is “atavistic”.
These are some great resolutions.
Yeah, half-way to the beard already. Haha.
These are great and I just may have to copy most of them for my own!
maybe not #1…haha.
I had an aunt and uncle that once lived in Picayune, MS. Never knew it meant anything though…ha!
